Eastern Delight
At 3600 pounds for a brand new motorcycle, this was a bargain I could not refuse. I initially bought it to have reliable transport after 3 problem-laden second hand ownerships, and it being a roughly 600 cc trial-bike was enough for me. During a test ride and the first days of ownership I started to like many of its features, such as the flexible mirrors, minimal engine vibrations, stretched out arms seating position, comfortable seat and its light weight, making it easy to move about.
Important accessories that I had fitted even before taking the motorcycle out of the show room, the Yamaha handguards, Scottoiler and higher Yamaha windscreen.
The 660 engine is a liquid cooled 4 stroke with a forward-inclined single cylinder arrangement and a 660.0cm3 displacement. It has a dry sump lubrication system, a 10:00:1 compression ratio and is started by an electric starting system.
The motorcycle came fitted with Michelin Sirac tyres.
Latest wiring additions were those for charging the battery and powering the GPS
At 865mm, the original seat height was not enough for my long legs, but after having the seat padding added and a new cover fitted, the seat height increased to a more comfortable 905mm.
The display area has an engine warning light, turn signal indicators, and a fuel level warning light that comes on at around 100 miles or when 5 litres are left in the 15 litre tank. Furthermore there is a high beam indicator light, a neutral indicator light, a coolant temperature light and an immobilizer system indicator light. The multi function display is equipped with a speedometer, two trip meters, an odometer, a self diagnosis device, a clock and a fuel reserve tripmeter. The background lights up green.
One of the most amazing features of the XT 660 is the headlight with the multi-reflector set up which illuminates not just to the front but also to the side at a nearly 180 degree angle. The 12 V headlight has a Halogen bulb, and cannot be switched off while the engine is running.
